Father Stephen Fawcett
Parish Priest
Father Stephen was born in Bilston, in the Black Country of south Staffordshire. He grew up there before studying Physics at university. Unfortunately, he was ill with glandular fever and so was unable to complete his degree. When he recovered he decided it was time to apply for the priesthood, and began his study at St Mary's College, Oscott, Birmingham. Once again his study was interrupted by illness - with ME or Post-viral Syndrome, and so what was due to take six years actually took eleven, but finally on 19th June, 1999 - the feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary - he was ordained priest.
After growing up as a member of Holy Trinity in Bilston, his first appointment was as assistant priest at Holy Trinity, Sutton Coldfield, where he spent two happy years. Then he was moved to another Holy Trinity - in Newcastle-under-Lyme, where he again spent two enjoyable years, until he was appointed as parish priest of Our Lady and St Werburgh's, with pastoral responsibility for Our Lady and St John the Baptist, Ashley. During his time up in North Staffs, he has also been chaplain to St John Fisher Catholic High School.
Father Stephen enjoys most sport, especially golf and badminton which he still plays, and also football. Being a man of faith he supports Wolves, and is looking forward to a long stay in the Premiership!?!
Father Stephen says,
"I've enjoyed all my time as a priest, but am particularly happy here at Clayton and Ashley. Archbishop Vincent came to visit the parishes in December and during the parish meeting at St Werburgh's the opening comment was, 'No-one is too young or too old to be part of our parish - everyone belongs here.' - and that is a good summary of both parishes: a strong sense of being one community, where everyone is welcome. There's also a great deal of generosity, with so many people helping out when asked. And being a man of many ideas, they get asked quite often!"
"There are strong links with the school, which I hope are getting stronger, not least through sacramental preparation for Confession, Communion and Confirmation. Together with Children's Liturgy, Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, family trips and youth groups starting up, I'd like to think we are a welcoming place to all, especially families."
